All but ready to roll

Here's a little advance warning of our move to the new site - and new forum - within the next 48 hours.
It is our intention to get the new site live today, March 1, 2007.

However, even if we do, it may take 24-72 hours before some users see the 'new site' at the same url (web address ie - it takes a little time for changes to spread around the internet.

During this period some users (mostly those within companies with their own internal cache etc) may see error pages on occasion. If this happens to you, please be patient and try again later.

We've listened hard to what you, the community of users of have told us about what you want from your site and forum.

The consensus was, in respect of the forum, that it was better to proceed on a solid footing for the future than to focus on retaining users' past history or records of previous postings.

I appreciate that won't be everyone's view - but it was the majority view from those who expressed an opinion.


The consensus was also to use a phpbb bulletin board. This is the standard and up-to-date kind found throughout the web and a style I hope you will be familiar with and feel immediately at home with.

It also means that, going forward, we will much more easily be able to upgrade and evolve the forum, while retaining your registrations, posts and histories. Our previous elderly and bespoke forums made this technically complex and prohibitively expensive.

The LRO team has been encouraged by how rapidly you have made the temporary forum feel like a vibrant, active community. And I sincerely hope you'll feel comfortable about doing the same thing again on the new forum.

The new site has plenty more to offer - you'll discover that when you get there.

It has been created extremely rapidly but is on a solid platform which we intend to use to evolve going forward.

It won't be perfect from day one. It will be in a state of permanent development - and we want you to partner with us in shaping what it eventually becomes - keep telling us what's wrong and what you want next. will be as useful as you make it, as successful as you intend it to be.

Freelander recall in the US

Land Rover is recalling 33,000 Freelanders in the U.S. over faulty brake lights. And it will mean owners have to return them to dealers not once, but twice.
The fault is described as the brake light staying on when the brake pedal isn't pressed, on the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website.
It goes on to say that warning lights for hill descent control, traction control and cruise control can also light up.
Dealers must install new switches of the same design in March and then replace them when a redesigned unit is available in May.
All Freelanders built at Solihull between September 2001 and May 2005 could be affected, says

LRO's Defender up for sale!

2003 Defender 90 Td5 XS (Land Rover Owner International magazine’s modified 90)

This well-equipped vehicle is one of the most famous Defender’s in the world.

Originally a Land Rover press fleet vehicle, it appeared on BBC’s Top Gear when Richard Hammond successfully made the case for Land Rover winning the Greatest Car Of All Time award. See below:

For the last three years it’s been run by Land Rover Owner International magazine’s Editor-in-Chief John Pearson.

New site: Progress report

Updated: Feb 23, 8.40am.
It seems there are still a series of minor bugs which have to be attended to on the new site. Launching just before the weekend is always risky (because of the lack of back-up you have if things go pear-shaped) so I'm going to have to say Friday's launch must be postponed.
The good news is we aren't far off, we've started adding editorial content and for the most part the site is working very well. I'm sure our tech bods will crack the minor bugs rapidly and we'll progress to a solid launch in the early part of next week. In the meantime, we'll bring you updates on this blog and the message boards remain open.

Hello all. Feb 23 is looming large so it's time I gave you a progress report.
The team working on the new LRO are hard at it (some will be working through the night tonight) with the intention of providing a site we can start adding content to by Wednesday morning.
At this stage it's still unclear as to whether or not the new forum will be ready at the same time as the rest of the site.
But that doesn't mean we'll go live with no forum. Instead, if that is our only option, we'll launch the new site with links to the current temporary Message Board you find linked from this blogsite.
Design has gone very well and I think you'll like the new look.
More updates as we progress. If you have comments, please do add them below.

Chase is on for 300 £30K Pursuits

A new limited edition Discovery 3, called the Pursuit, will be on sale next month, for close to £30,000 OTR.

Only 300 will be available from Land Rover dealerships. Based on the TDV6 GS model, the Pursuit also features Java Black paint work with Ebony interior, 19” alloy wheels, body coloured wheel arch surrounds, manual leather seats and chrome finish mirror caps.

All Pursuit limited editions are powered by the Discovery’s TDV6 diesel engine and feature standard technologies including Hill Descent Control, air suspension and Terrain Response™, all industry-firsts for Land Rover.

“Since launch, the Discovery 3 has brought new levels of ability, comfort and refinement to the large 4x4 market. Winning 95 awards worldwide is a testament to its class-leading diesel engine, its versatility and its all-round package,” said John Edwards, Land Rover UK managing director.

“The limited-edition Discovery 3 Pursuit gives customers the opportunity to buy an exclusive specification for the exceptional price of £29,995 OTR for the TDV6 manual and £30,995 OTR with automatic transmission. We think this represents incredible value for money.”

Land Rover to launch commercial versions of Discovery 3

Land Rover is to launch a commercial derivative of the Discovery 3 (shown right, image from Land Rover). It goes on sale on March 19, 2007.
It has been engineered, with approval from HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC), to gain N1 Light Commercial 4x4 Vehicle status.

Business users will be able to take advantage of the Benefit in Kind tax and full VAT reclaim associated with Light Commercial Vehicles.
There will be two derivatives available: the Discovery 3 Commercial and the Discovery 3 XS Commercial. Standard features include 2130 litres of loadspace with a full length phenolic floor, privacy glass, two-piece bulkhead, four corner air suspension and Terrain Response™.
“Since launch, our dealers have received a number of requests from customers for a commercial derivative, many of whom bought standard models and then converted them independently for their own commercial use,” stated John Edwards, Land Rover UK managing director.
“The launch of the Discovery 3 Commercial means that for the first time, customers are now able to purchase a Land Rover approved Discovery 3 commercial vehicle, which benefits from the superior levels of ride, handling, comfort and equipment offered by the standard Discovery 3.

"We believe the Discovery Commercial will further re-define the 4x4 commercial segment.”
All Land Rover vehicles include a CO2 offset for the first 45,000 miles within the on-the-road price. Administered by Climate Care, an independent CO2 offset provider, the programme ensures that the average amount of CO2 produced by a Land Rover is offset by investments in a mixed portfolio of projects, including renewable energy, technology change and energy efficiency initiatives.

Land Rover is doing it's bit. The company said yesterday: "Land Rover is on standby to offer the services of up to 100 vehicles and their off-road experts, following extreme weather warnings for central and north-west areas of the UK.

"As in previous years, all 10 Land Rover Experience centres in the UK will be available tomorrow (Thursday) to assist the local emergency services - including highway patrols, fire services and local police forces – helping people get home safely. They will also help to recover vehicles broken down in the bad weather and vehicles involved in road traffic accidents.

"John Edwards, Land Rover UK managing director commented: "Year after year Land Rover has assisted local authorities in severe weather and emergency situations. With such an extreme forecast for the next few days, we've assured them that our vehicles will once again be available should they need them."

"Land Rover UK has also this afternoon (Wednesday) dispatched a fleet of vehicles from their head office in Warwickshire, to support police forces in the West Midlands, Warwickshire, Northamptonshire and West Mercia areas.

"Land Rovers have a towing capability of up to 3.5 tonnes, permanent four-wheel drive and advanced off-road technology such as Terrain Response™. This includes a snow setting to utilise the vehicle's electronic controls and traction aids in slippery and treacherous conditions.
Land Rover Experience Centres offer a variety of courses and training to teach safe and responsible off-road driving skills."

Be a part of it

Land Rover Classic Parts is looking for vehicles and owners to star in its Part of your Life advertising campaign.

To be in with a chance of being featured, explain in 50 words or fewer how you use your Land Rover, how often and where.
If you are successful, LRCP will interview you, and photograph you and your vehicle. There is no need for the vehicle to be modified or be pristine: it just needs to be, as the saying goes, a part of your life.

Old site closes down

The old Land Rover Owner website ( is no more - due to circumstances beyond our control.
We apologise whole-heartedly to all those people inconvenienced by this in any way; forum users who can no longer access their posts, blog users who were unable to save their content before the site was closed, anyone listing their items for sale in our classified section and of course our advertisers.
We don't under-estimate how annoying this is or the difficulties it may cause you. If we had a viable option, rest assured, we would take it.
The good news is that we plan build a replacement - and have a bag full of lessons learned to make sure it serves the LRO community better than ever. This will be ready to go in a very short period of time - by which we mean less than 20 days from today.
In the meantime we have set up temporary message boards (see links, left) as a short-term home for the LRO community.
We will use this blog to keep you up to date with progress on the new site, to hear your comments and suggestions about it, and to keep you up to date with all Land Rover news. So please keep checking back. Sign up to a feed from this site and you're guaranteed to hear the latest the moment we publish it.
